A shallow, flat-water lagoon on the east coast of Zanzibar. An IKO-certified school that's been teaching here for more than a decade. The closest kite school to our villas — a ten-minute drive down the beach road.
Paje Kitesurf School was founded by Squatter Reuben Taylor and has operated on this stretch of beach for over a decade under Olkutati Zanzibar Ltd. Every instructor is IKO-certified — the International Kiteboarding Organization standard — and the school issues the IKO Kiteboarder Card on completion, which you can use anywhere in the world.
We point our guests at them because the east coast is unusually forgiving for beginners. The reef holds the ocean off the beach; inside it, the water stays shallow and flat for hundreds of metres, which means you can practice standing up instead of swimming back to shore. The wind is predictable — steady trades from the north-east in the Kaskazi season (mid-December to mid-March) and from the south in the Kusi season (mid-June to mid-October).
Lessons are radio-assisted, equipment is included, and the school's tradition is to walk along the beach with you on day one until you're up and going.
